Fall is officially here in Quebec: the leaves are turning red more and more every day, cold and crisp weather as well as rainy days have started and… runny noses too. Oh the joy and fun of the cold and flu season.
I just know that this season will be rough: my daughter, now 15 months, just started daycare a month ago and I’ll be back at work in less than two weeks since my maternity leave/recovery from my Achilles tendon laceration are soon over. Hello, germs. There will be sick days where all we want to do is curl up in bed. But, we all know that kiddos, even sick, can find energy to play. That’s why every year, when fall begins, I prepare my cold/flu/virus season kit. I make sure we have all we need (Tylenol, Pedialyte, Kleenex, etc.) and then I fill out a box with items I know they will enjoy, even sick. Think coloring books, Schleich animals, bath bombs… just a few little things that will put those cute smiles back on their faces.
But, mostly, this box contains BOOKS. Since we are going to be home for the day with all the time in the world to relax and read, I like choosing books of the following categories:
– Seek and find books (i.e. Where is Waldo?)
– Documentary books (animals, dinosaurs, world atlas, …). No worries if it’s long to read, we have lots of time ahead of us!
I just go through my Secret Book Stash and pick a few, then wrap them up (it’s always more fun that way!) and put them in my ready-to-go box.
(Then I add a tin of my favorite tea: that puts a smile on my face and helps me get through all of those germs, haha!).
So when at 2:00 am I hear: “Mommyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! I’m not feeling well!”, I know I’m ready for what will come next. 😉
